Résumé

Cet article propose d’appréhender l’archéologie des conflits à travers les traces matérielles laissées par la guerre de siège dans le monde grec antique. Quelles sont ces traces ? Comment les relier à un événement en particulier ? Qu’apportent-elles à l’histoire militaire ? Il s’agira d’abord de poser les bases d’une réflexion méthodologique et épistémologique en vue de dégager les limites et les enjeux de l’archéologie des conflits dans le champ des études antiques, ensuite, de caractériser les traces archéologiques d’un siège à travers des cas d’étude (Olynthe, Méthônè, Halicarnasse, Rhodes) qui posent la question de la narration, de la matérialité et de la réalité de l’événement militaire.

This paper proposes to approach the archaeology of conflicts through the material traces left by siege warfare in the ancient Greek world. What are these traces? How can they be linked to a particular event? What contribution do they make to military history? The first step will be to lay the foundations for methodological and epistemological reflection with a view to identifying the limits and challenges of conflict archaeology in the field of ancient studies. The second step will be to characterise the archaeological traces of a siege through case studies (Olynthos, Methonè, Halicarnassos, Rhodes) that raise questions about the narrative, materiality and reality of the military event.
