Abstract

In India, as elsewhere, the desire to ensure the best possible birth is manifested in a multitude of prescriptions that aim to control the female body during pregnancy. In order to analyse the various social injunctions specific to motherhood, the article focuses on women's experiences based on two ethnographic studies conducted in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Through the concepts of incorporation and eugenic labour, the article highlights the multitude of tasks performed by expectant mothers in search of the ideal baby, namely healthy, masculine and fair-skinned. The importance given to the impact of the gaze and the effects of food, reflect the permeability of bodies and encourage pregnant women to close auto-surveillance. The article also shows how these prenatal prescriptions are more constraining for women from disadvantaged backgrounds, thus revealing the social inequalities intrinsic to reproductive work.
