Abstract

The concept of tribe is more problematic in North-East India than in other parts of the country because it applies to ethnic groupings mostly forged during the colonial era that are often heterogeneous and particularly fluid. Their contours are constantly changing in the contemporary context, as a result of complex relations between state and tribe, caste and tribe, or between tribes themselves, often driven by political or religious motives.
